Volcanoes and other energy….

At 6:30a.m. on a recent Saturday morning, I sat on my kitchen deck with a small grand-girl wrapped in a blanket on my lap, listening ‘to the world wake up’ as is our practice. Eventually she got around to telling me she wanted to watch a video on my phone.  Typically, she wants to play a game or see a cartoon of some kind.  That day, she said she wanted to watch a video about volcanoes.  Really?  Yes.  So, we found a National Geographic video about Hawaiian volcanoes—quite fascinating.  The energy that builds up underground over years and millennia, eventually spills out of the earth and sometimes forms new land mass. It takes a long time. But it eventually, that energy finds an outlet.

Perhaps it’s the same with the energy I feel gathering deep inside me.  There’s something building in there. It likely will take patient practice for it to find its outlet through my life and out into the world. So, while I have happily sold a few paintings these weeks, where the good stuff will continue to come from is practice.

These are parts of 3 pieces I’ve been working on these last weeks and have just posted on this site. They are the result of this practice. And they are reminiscent of ambiguous upheaval, a visual representation of change. Sometimes discombobulating. Sometimes painful. Always followed by grief and, for the most part, welcomed. (Another paradox.) The previous conditions were not sustainable.  Forces were brought to bear.  Change was made.  Now we grieve the loss, and the gain, and try to get our bearings in this new reality. Like living near a volcano where there is the constant awareness of the ‘mounting energy’ below, I continue to want to tap into that in myself! Do you feel some of this inside you?
